Did You Know

If you are approved for Social Security Disability, you will be eligible for Medicare 2 years after the date SSA finds you disabled.

If you have insufficient work credits from your own work history, other options are available.

SSI is available for disabled individuals who also meet strict guidelines for low income.

A young adult may be eligible for Disabled Adult Child benefits under a parent’s work history if disabled before age 22 and the parent is either deceased, receiving Social Security Disability benefits, or receiving Social Security Retirement.

A Disabled Adult Child could potentially collect off of a biological parent’s record, an adoptive parent’s record, and in some instances, step-parent, grandparent, or step-grandparent’s record.

Once disability has been determined, SSI payments may be payable from the date of filing your application. However, Social Security Disability payments are not payable until after a 5 month waiting period from the date SSA determines you became disabled. In some situations, you may be eligible for SSI payments during that 5 month waiting period.
